Ubuntu What?

Ubuntu What?

Is this some sort of African language?

No, Ubuntu is a computer operating system [OS], just like Windows OS and it’s free.

An operating system or OS is software that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer operating system, a computer per se and software programs written for the computer not including the OS would be useless.

There are several operating systems in general use today. The main ones that you may or may not have heard about are;

1. Windows OS (XP, Vista, Windows 7 etc)
2. Mac OS (Maverick, Lion etc)
4. Linux (which has several versions including one called Ubuntu. All these OS’s are made from same base Linux program without getting more technical.

5. Sun Solaris OS

6. Google Chrome (this OS operates from a web log on and is not actually ‘installed’ on a computer)

The Android OS is based on the Linux base program which powers phones such as Samsung, LG, HTC, Google etc, and Android tablets so it should not be under estimated .

If you have an old or retired computer sitting around or as a project for your kid/s you can download and install Ubuntu and have a play around. You may even like it enough to use as your main operating system if you can live without some of the ‘Windows’ stuff.
